Chinatown

The heart of Chicago's Chinese heritage

About the Neighborhood

Living in Chinatown

Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood is located south of downtown and is easily accessible via the Red Line. Known for its Chinese heritage, this neighborhood dates back to 1912. Major landmarks in Chinatown include the Nine Dragon Wall, a reproduction of a 15th-century mural located in Beijing, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, and Ping Tom Memorial Park. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, tea houses, and local shops centered on South Wentworth Avenue and Cermak Road. Chinatown has events throughout the year, including the Lunar New Year Parade, the Dragon Boat Race, and the Summer Fair, making it a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

What Neighbors Say

Chicago’s Chinatown is a vibrant neighborhood built on generations of culture, resilience, and community. From family-owned restaurants and longtime businesses to new ideas taking shape, it continues to honor its roots while evolving with the city. More than a destination, Chinatown is a place where tradition, family, and the future come together.
Chicago’s Chinatown beautifully blends deep-rooted history with a fresh, evolving energy. I love grabbing a bao from Chiu Quon Bakery for breakfast or a late night bite at Gao’s BBQ and Crab. You can frequently find our staff at Bernice’s in Bridgeport or Skylark in Pilsen for a drink after work.
One of the best ways to experience Chinatown is by exploring beyond Wentworth Avenue. Take time to walk through the beautiful Ping Tom Memorial Park, home to Chicago Outdoor Collective, where visitors can rent kayaks, join guided tours, or take beginner-friendly kayaking lessons on the Chicago River. From the water, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the South Loop skyline, including the iconic Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower). After your paddle, reward yourself with authentic dim sum or another local meal in Chinatown Square, or simply relax with family and friends by enjoying a picnic in one of Chicago’s most scenic riverfront parks. It’s the perfect blend of culture, nature, and outdoor adventure—all within one neighborhood.
Don’t be afraid to just wander around! Chinatown is super walkable, and half the fun is popping into the candy shops, little markets, and unique stores you’ll stumble across. Grab dinner, explore for a while, then finish the night with drinks and karaoke at King KTV.
